VEHICLE EXTINGUISHMENT
CAR FIRE BLANKET
The effectiveness of fire blankets lies in their ability to prevent oxygen from entering and smother the fire within minutes, without wasting resources such as water and without harming the environment as extinguisher powder does. In addition, they are certified according to the DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11 standard, which defines the technical and quality requirements for fire blankets intended for interventions in gasoline and electric vehicles.
FIRE BLANKETS FOR PETROL AND ELECTRIC CARS
Car fire blankets are an effective solution to contain or extinguish vehicle fires safely. Texfire offers two variants of fire-resistant blankets, made with different fabrics to suit various emergency scenarios and levels of thermal resistance.
The car fire blanket is made from a fibreglass fabric with a special coating on both sides, giving it high resistance to heat and mechanical stress. The blanket’s fabric is certified under the UNE EN 13501-1 standard, and the blanket itself is also certified in accordance with the new German standard DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11, which defines the specific technical and quality requirements for fire blankets intended for use with electric and petrol vehicles.
Measuring 9x6 m (54 m²) and 10x8 m (80 m²), this blanket can cover most vehicles, including SUVs and off-road models. For easier handling, it features four corner grips, colour-coded: two dark ones on the right side and two light ones on the left, ensuring proper orientation when unfolding.
It is also folded in a "Z" shape for quick deployment and comes in a waterproof textile bag, making it easy to store and transport.
On the other hand, a more advanced version is also available: the car fire PRO blanket, measuring 6x9 metres (54 m²) and made from silica fabric with a double-sided coating that provides enhanced thermal resistance. The blanket’s fabric is certified under the UNE EN 13501-1 standard, and the blanket itself complies with the new German standard DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11. This certification confirms that our blankets offer thermal resistance, mechanical stability, and durability under the extreme conditions that may occur during electric vehicle fires.
This model is designed to withstand extreme temperatures, delivering superior performance in high-intensity fires.
Both blankets have been designed to prevent flame spread and minimise damage to the surrounding area. For safety reasons, it is recommended that at least two people take part in their deployment and positioning.
ADVANTAGES OF FIRE BLANKETS FOR CARS
Fire blankets offer multiple advantages over other fire-fighting systems, such as powder extinguishers or water hoses:
- No water supply needed.
- No expiration date.
- No training required.
- Prevents flame spread.
- Helps contain a large amount of smoke.
- Provides clear visibility and control of the situation.
- Stops fire residues from entering the drainage system.
- Does not leave a mess like extinguisher powder.
- Can be used near electrical panels.
- Assists firefighters in their operation.

Texfire Fire Blanket for Electric Vehicle Fires
Fire safety and suppression in electric vehicles is one of today’s major challenges. Texfire, a manufacturer of fabrics and products for lithium battery fire protection, recently conducted a test involving an electric vehicle to assess the performance of its fire blanket designed for electric cars.
These types of tests, carried out in collaboration with fire departments, not only help evaluate the product’s performance but also provide insight into how professionals deploy the blanket and allow for the collection of their technical feedback and experiences.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
ATTENTION
The Texfire fire blanket can be used several times as long as it has not been seriously damaged in any of its uses. The customer is responsible for checking that the blanket is in perfect condition and, if necessary, also for decontaminating it after each use, as well as for folding and storing it correctly.
Do you want to know the differences between a single-use car fire blanket and a multi-purpose blanket?
DIFFERENCES IN THE USE OF THE BLANKET BETWEEN COMBUSTION AND ELECTRIC VEHICLES
It extinguishes fires in combustion engine vehicles and allows for control in hybrid and electric vehicles.
GASOLINE VEHICLES:
The Texfire fire blanket is a fire-resistant blanket developed to extinguish fires in gasoline vehicles. In this type of cars, the fire usually occurs due to overheating of some electrical component or engine failure. In any case, the use of the blanket prevents the entry of oxygen, causing the fire to suffocate and the flames to go out.
ELECTRIC VEHICLES:
The batteries of electric vehicles generate energy through chemical reactions that, if the battery is damaged or faulty, can lead to what is known as Thermal Runaway. This phenomenon causes an uncontrolled increase in temperature that often results in battery fire.
In some cases, depending on the materials used in the battery, flammable gases may be released, which further fuel the flames. In such cases, the use of the blanket does not have the "smothering" effect, and therefore, other elements such as thermal lances may be necessary to help extinguish the fire. Nevertheless, even in cases where the battery cannot be "smothered," the use of fire blankets helps contain the flames and greatly reduces the spread of toxic fumes, facilitating the intervention of emergency services and preventing the fire from spreading.

Technical Assessment of Texfire’s Car Fire Blanket
The blanket acts as a containment measure: in the event of an explosion, it helps limit the impact radius and reduce the effects caused by the battery.
Héctor Rus
Fire Inspector in Valencia
The fire blanket for cars represents a major breakthrough: it has successfully reduced flame intensity and lowered the concentration of hydrocarbons present in the released gases.
Alfons Tormo
Head of Technological Risks, Bombers de la Generalitat
These blankets could be key to preventing vehicle fires from reaching the scale at which they are currently spreading.
Santiago Artal
Firefighter, Zaragoza Fire Department
The blanket gives us valuable time to make decisions and, at the same time, helps prevent the spread of flames in the vehicle.
Joaquín Pérez
Senior Officer, Toledo Fire Department Consortium
