New DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11 Standard for Fire-Resistant Blankets in Electric Vehicles

Recently, Germany published the standard DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11, which regulates for the first time the technical and quality requirements for fire blankets intended for use in electric vehicles.

WHY IS THIS STANDARD IMPORTANT?

Until the publication of this standard, there was no specific regulation for fire blankets for cars. The only way to guarantee a minimum level of safety was through the certification of the fabrics used, based on the standard UNE EN 13501-1. However, this regulation did not address key aspects such as prolonged thermal resistance, mechanical stability, or the functionality of blankets in real emergency situations.

The new German standard DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11 fills this gap by defining the necessary requirements for fire blankets to be effective in containing and limiting fires in electric vehicles—a growing need due to the increasing popularity of this type of transport.

KEY ASPECTS OF THE STANDARD

Thermal resistance
The blankets must demonstrate their ability to withstand extreme temperatures generated by lithium-ion battery fires.
Mechanical stability
The standard requires the blankets to have a high level of cut resistance.
Chemical resistance
The blankets' ability to resist exposure to chemicals such as oils, corrosive liquids, or battery residues is evaluated.
Electrostatic charge
Since the blankets are used in highly sensitive contexts, they must minimize the risk of electrostatic discharge.
Marking and manufacturer information
All blankets must include clear and complete identifications to specify their technical characteristics and usage instructions.
