FIRE-RETARDANT BATTERY BLANKET
MULTILAYER FIRE-RETARDANT BLANKET FOR CONTROLLING LITHIUM BATTERY FIRES
The fire-retardant battery blanket is a safety device specially developed to control fires and powerful explosions that occur when lithium battery cells ignite. This blanket has been designed with a central reinforcement to enable its direct contact with batteries in the event of a fire.
The central reinforcement of this battery blanket consists of a multilayer structure with thermal insulation and reinforced fabrics, which together can withstand temperatures up to 1,500ºC, flammable gases, multiple explosions, impacts from incandescent materials, and splashes of acids or other corrosive particles.
Surrounding the central body is a layer of fire-retardant fabric that includes a perimeter counterweight to provide stability and prevent the blanket from lifting due to deflagration pressure. This perimeter fabric also reduces the spread of flames and helps contain any projected materials. It also retains some of the smoke and gases released during cell combustion.
Texfire developed this solution specifically for industries handling lithium batteries, such as battery manufacturers, repair and exchange workshops, charging hubs, bike or electric scooter rental companies, battery recycling firms, and more.
The blanket measures 2x2 meters and includes four handles at the center to facilitate handling and even allow its use as a fireproof shield. The perimeter counterweights are made of stainless steel, and the entire blanket is crafted with fire-retardant, reinforced thread.
PROPERTIES
- Withstands 1,100ºC continuously and peaks up to 1,500ºC.
- Fireproof, thermally-insulated multilayer core.
- Counterweight system for increased stability during explosions.
- Includes four handles for use as a fireproof shield.
- Kevlar fireproof thread stitching.
- Single-layer 2x2 meter perimeter to contain flames and projections.
APPLICATIONS
- Lithium battery fire containment.
ELECTRIC BATTERY WARNING
Using this blanket on lithium batteries will help prevent flames from spreading but is unlikely to completely extinguish the fire. When an electric battery catches fire, its acids generate flammable gases. This means that even if a blanket is used to “smother” the fire, the battery will generate enough combustible gases to prevent full extinguishment.
USAGE RECOMMENDATIONS
- It is recommended that at least two people place the blanket over the battery.
- Do not remove the blanket from the burning battery without the supervision of emergency services.
- The Texfire fire-retardant battery blanket can be used multiple times, provided it has not suffered significant damage from previous uses. Do not reuse if any damage is detected that could impact performance. The customer is responsible for ensuring that the blanket is in perfect condition and, if necessary, decontaminating it after each use, as well as folding and storing it correctly.
